The Royle Family Christmas Special 2008 was eagerly anticipated and promised to be one of the highlights of the Christmas TV schedules however a lot of people gave it some very harsh reviews after it was broadcast.

My own opinion is that although it wasn’t the best episode they have ever made, it was still a very funny episode and one that I thoroughly enjoyed. It was never going to as good without Anthony, Cheryl or Mary and Joe from next door, but there were still some really good comedy moments and the new characters, ie Dave’s parents, fitted in nicely.

I would have preferred it if they had kept the characters in the Royle household as it didn’t feel the same seeing these familiar characters in an unfamiliar setting, but as I say it was still a decent episode. I own every episode of The Royle Family so I will buying this one anyway so my collection remains complete, but if you want to make your own mind up, you can now watch this episode again as it’s just been released on DVD.

The Royle Family Christmas Special - The New Sofa DVD features this entire episode, which was around an hour in length, although it’s unclear whether there are any extra features or not. Looking at various websites that sell this DVD there are no mentions of any extras, which is a shame.
