Mad Men has just returned to our TV screens here in the UK with the launch of Season 2, but if you missed out on the first series of this classy drama series, then I can highly recommend you check out the Mad Men Season 1 DVD because it’s currently available for just £12.98.

Mad Men is one of the best TV series to have come out of the US in recent years in my opinion. It’s set in an advertising agency in 1960s New York and is written by Matthew Weiner, one of the writers and producers of The Sopranos.

This series is very slow-moving and there is little real action but despite that it really draws you in and leaves you wanting more because it really focuses on the characters and how they interact with each other. As the first series develops we slowly start to learn a little bit more about each character and their personal lives away from the office.

It’s beautifully written, the settings are extremely authentic and it provides an excellent social commentary of the 1960s and the people involved in this cut-throat advertising industry at the time. The men spend much of their lives smoking and drinking and are egotistical, womanising and ambitious, while the women in the series are put-upon and reluctantly tolerant of the men in their lives and their attitudes towards them.

I cannot really praise Mad Men highly enough. It really is pure quality. Both the writing and the acting are exceptional and it’s a shame that hardly anyone in this country has discovered it yet because it really is a top quality series.
