The Damned United DVD

The Damned United has been topping the DVD charts for several weeks now despite only being released at the end of last month. It tells the story of Brian Clough, the legendary football manager who was arguably one of the greatest managers this country has ever produced.

More specifically it focuses on one particular period of his life - his ill-fated time as manager of Leeds which lasted just 44 days. Clough is played by Michael Sheen, who does a fantastic job by the way, and is supported by Timothy Spall (who plays his assistant Peter Taylor), Colm Meaney (who plays Don Revie) and Jim Broadbent (who plays the chairman of Derby County).

The film itself received mixed reviews when it was first shown in cinemas around the country but I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m a massive Clough fan anyway but I think anyone who has an interest in football is sure to enjoy it. Most football-related films are usually pretty poor, but this is easily one of the best I’ve seen.

There’s plenty of humour throughout but there’s also lots of serious drama as well as we get to see one of the unhappiest periods of Clough’s illustrious career unfold.

Anyway if you would like to watch this film, you may be interested in buying The Damned United DVD. It only costs £9.99 and is packed with extras such as a commentary from the cast and crew, documentaries showing how the film was made and how football has changed since the 1970s, deleted scenes, and features on Brian Clough himself, including some of his most memorable quotes.
